This really isn’t a sad story, because Hayden is a happy and healthy young man. And we’re healthy and happy too—because Medicaid made that possible.
Jay Williams and his wife never expected to become full-time caregivers again, but everything changed when a call from the Department of Human Services turned their world upside down. The first time they heard about their grandson Hayden was under devastating circumstances. At just six months old, Hayden had been severely burned; Third-degree burns covered 30 percent of his body, and he nearly died.
After the injury, Hayden spent five months in an incubator, too vulnerable to even be touched due to the risk of infection. Since then, he’s endured 14 surgeries, including skin grafts, laser treatments, and scar revisions. His care continues with regular medical and mental health treatment, medication, counseling, and ongoing support.
But Jay is clear: “This really isn’t a sad story, because Hayden is a happy and healthy young man. And we’re healthy and happy too, because Medicaid made that possible.”
For Jay and his wife, Medicaid wasn’t just a safety net, it was the foundation for healing and stability. “Medicaid did more than just pay his medical expenses. It allowed Hayden to stay with a family who can afford to give him the love and time and attention that truly heals.”
