Proven Best Choices
01.24.2016
Families USA and the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER) have produced a new series of consumer guides to help patients and clinicians focus on which tests or treatments to choose when several reasonable options exist.
New framework to help patients and clinicians understand high-value care options
The Proven Best Choices guides present a new framework that will help patients, families, and clinicians understand information on effectiveness and value and integrate that information into clinical decisions. The first two guides are on breast cancer screening options for women with dense breast tissue and prostate cancer treatments for men with low-risk prostate cancer. The next guide to be released in 2016 will examine the best-proven treatments for opioid dependence.
What Is a Proven Best Choice?
The Proven Best Choice rating considers these factors:
- How well one option works compared to others based on scientific evidence
- How much one option costs in relation to its benefits
Making decisions about your health care may not be easy, but knowing the Proven Best Choice is a good place to start.
Guides for patients and clinicians
This guide discusses screening options for women with dense breast tissue. It will help you prepare to talk with your doctor and decide what’s best for you.
Prostate Cancer
(On September 14, new data was published regarding treatment options for men with low-risk prostate cancer. Following evaluation of the data, this fact sheet will be updated and republished.)
