Days of Action Demonstrate the Power of Advocacy to Defend Medicaid and Protect Valuable Health Coverage and Care

05.09.2025

On May 6–7, Families USA joined forces with Community Catalyst, the National Health Law Program (NHeLP), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), to help coordinate hundreds of organizations across the country in efforts to defend Medicaid. Threats to the Medicaid program continue to loom large as Congress is putting together a bill that would slash funding and rip health care away from millions of Americans. On these days of action advocates demonstrated a united, powerful commitment to defending health coverage and care, as well as protecting the health care system we all rely on.

United with One Voice

We kicked things off on Monday, May 5 with our Three Weeks to Save Medicaid virtual rally with nearly 750 attendees joining in the fight to defend Medicaid. We were honored to have Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin join the rally to illuminate the importance of Medicaid in all communities and to recognize our power as a united front. Advocates from Colorado and Virginia shared stories about how they are working to lift up the voices of people with Medicaid in their communities.

We are grateful to all who made time out of their afternoons for the rally, and we especially thank our partners who co-sponsored the call: the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (APIAHF), Caring Across Generations, the Coalition on Human Needs, Community Catalyst, Community Change, Health Care for America Now (HCAN), the National Health Law Program (NHeLP), the National Immigration Law Center, People’s Action Institute, Center for Popular Democracy, Protect Our Care, and SEIU.

The Breakdown

During the Days of Action, Families USA helped to turn out:

  • Hundreds and hundreds of emails sent to Congressional representatives (so far!).
  • Tens of thousands of calls to the hotline provided by SEIU.
  • Hundreds turned out in person over 24 hours to stand on the National Mall and show why Medicaid matters!
  • More than 1,000 stories shared during the Medicaid vigil.

Save the Date!

These were the first of several days of action that are planned as the fight to protect Medicaid continues. Mark your calendars for May 13–14, when we expect the House Energy & Commerce Committee to mark up the bill with Medicaid cuts, and the week of May 19, when the full House could potentially vote on a final bill.
