Trump’s Budget, the Next Round of Cuts to Health Care for America’s Families

Over $600 Billion in Newly Proposed Medicaid Cuts Would be on top of $800 Billion Cuts already in House Republican Health Care Bill

Washington, D.C. – The Trump administration today released its proposed budget which would slash spending on Medicaid by an astounding $1.5 trillion over the next 10 years. The $616 billion in new cuts to Medicaid appear to be on top of the $880 billion already included in House Republicans’ health care bill, which also allows states to waive important protection for families and children. This proposal would cut Medicaid by nearly 50% by 2027. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has estimated the original House cuts to Medicaid and the Marketplace alone would cause 24 million people to lose coverage.

Following is the statement of Frederick Isasi, executive director of Families USA, on the proposed budget:

“These kinds of punishing budget cuts are unconscionable in America. They fall almost entirely on children, the disabled and the elderly. How can President Trump turn his back on these people, while at the same time showering the wealthiest among us with trillions of dollars’ worth of tax breaks?

“This should prompt those governors who have remained silent on the House’s health care legislation to think again. The Medicaid cuts in the House bill were just round one. They are going to get worse, devastating state budgets and leaving millions of people without health care.

“We all need to stand up for families and tell President Trump we will not let this happen in America.”
