Strategic Communications Expert Sara Lonardo Joins Families USA as Senior Director of Communications

Sara Lonardo, a strategic communications leader, has been appointed Senior Director of Communications at Families USA. In her new role, Lonardo advances and promotes the organization’s policy initiatives to ensure families have access to affordable, high-quality health and health care. She leads, develops, and oversees the implementation of comprehensive communications plans and projects encompassing media relations, social, digital, storytelling, and messaging strategies. She also drives the organization’s rapid response to new and emerging health care policy developments in health equity, value, coverage, and consumer engagement.

Lonardo has a wide range of communications and health policy expertise. Prior to joining Families USA, she was Assistant Director of Communications for National Media at the Service Employees International Union — where she told the story of the union’s two million members to the media and elected officials.

Her background also includes nine years on Capitol Hill, serving as Communications Director for Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and in multiple roles for the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee under then-Chairman Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) and the Education and Labor Committee under then-Chairman George Miller (D-CA). During her time on Capitol Hill, she was President of the Women’s Congressional Staff Association and continues as board chair of the Women’s Congressional Staff Foundation — which she co-founded. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts.

“Sara brings dynamic experience in strategic communications to Families USA, with a background in health policy and a savvy view of national politics,” said Frederick Isasi, Executive Director of Families USA. “She knows how to move the needle in order to achieve the greatest impact for families and has expertise in all facets of communications—from media relations to digital to consumer engagement. She will be a critical member of our senior leadership team, dedicated to our mission of ensuring that no one in this country has to choose between paying their rent and going to the doctor.”

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be joining the outstanding, dedicated team at Families USA,” Lonardo said. “The right of every single person to obtain high-quality, affordable health care is fundamental to building a stronger America where we all have a chance to succeed. Families USA has a long history of working to achieve this goal and I’m looking forward to continuing this work during this pivotal moment for health care in our country.”
