Republicans ACA Repeal Bill Gets Even Worse

Washington, D.C. – Republicans late last night released their amended bill to replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The bill speeds up the date for the repeal of Medicaid expansion and ends the traditional Medicaid program by capping and cutting funding, sending it to the states in the form of either a block grant or per capita cap, both of which would leave states shouldering far more Medicaid costs than they do today. The bill still leaves millions of consumers with far less financial help than they currently receive under the ACA. Moreover, the bill is being brought up for a vote before a new assessment of its impact and cost can be calculated. “It’s extraordinary that the House Republicans are rushing forward without allowing an analysis of this revised legislation so House members – and more importantly, the people they represent – will know its full impact. The previous version stripped coverage for 24 million people in America and raised health care costs for millions more.

“But, rather than lessen the harm of that bill, Republicans crafted an even more outrageous measure in an attempt to cobble together the conservative votes needed to pass the House. And people in America from all walks of life are going to pay the price, all while the wealthy and big corporations receive almost $600 billion in tax cuts. It’s shameful.

“The President’s support for this bill means it is now officially ‘TrumpCare,’ and he needs to explain to the country why he has abandoned his promise that no one would lose coverage and costs will be lower for everyone.”
