Republican Leaders Release Tax Bill that Ends Coverage for Millions; Sets the Stage to Cut Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security

Washington, D.C. – Republican leaders in the House and Senate have released their strictly partisan deal on the tax bill.Read our analysis here. Following is the statement of Families USA’s Executive Director, Frederick Isasi:

“Republican leadership in the House and Senate have come up with a deal that will increase health insurance premiums, making millions of people – including those with pre-existing conditions like cancer or diabetes – pay more for their coverage, while causing millions more to lose their health coverage altogether. All of that to fund permanent tax cuts for their wealthy donors and corporations.

“And that’s just the immediate pain this partisan Republican bill would inflict on hard-working families. By increasing the federal deficit by trillions of dollars, Republican leadership and President Trump have been very clear that they are setting the stage for gigantic funding cuts to many programs that working families rely on including Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.

“When the president says he’s going to give Americans a ‘giant tax cut for Christmas,’ let’s be crystal clear which Americans he’s talking about. President Trump and Republican leaders in Congress are giving the super wealthy and corporations a huge tax break by taking away health care from hard-working families.

“Republicans in Congress should listen to the American people and stop attempting to rush through this astoundingly partisan and ill-conceived legislation that will hurt millions. Instead, Congress should work in a bipartisan effort, including providing five, full-years of funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program – which has been languishing for months. That would be a truly meaningful gift that the hard-working people of America deserve and expect.”
