House Committee Takes Key Step towards Stripping Health Coverage from Millions of Americans

Washington, D.C. – The House Ways and Means Committee took a key step last night to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The bill is expected to strip coverage from millions of Americans and drive up consumer costs. A wide variety of health stakeholders have denounced the pending legislation. Following is the statement of Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA, about these developments:

“President Trump and congressional leaders vowed to protect health coverage and to reduce costs for our nation’s families. The actions by the House Ways and Means Committee, and parallel efforts by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, however, do the exact opposite: Many millions will lose coverage and others will experience huge out-of-pocket cost increases.

“Incredibly, the bill showers substantial tax benefits for the very wealthy and special interest groups while eliminating health care affordability for working families. As more and more people learn about this cynical plan, and as people find out that their health lifeline is in jeopardy, the strong, negative reactions to the bill will undoubtedly intensify”
