Graham-Cassidy Put on Hold, But Threats to Health Care Remain
Senate Should Return to Bipartisanship and Immediately Address Stability and CHIP Extension
Washington, D.C. – Following is the statement of Families USA Executive Director Frederick Isasi on the announcement Tuesday that the Graham-Cassidy plan to repeal the Affordable Care Act has been shelved for the time being.
“America’s families can breathe a sigh of relief–for now. Republican leadership and the White House have been single-minded in their zeal to repeal the current law, even if that means taking health insurance away from millions of people, and they promise Graham-Cassidy will be coming back.
We want to thank senators from both sides of the aisle who stood up for families to oppose this legislation. We hope that Republican leadership will finally learn an important lesson: America’s families oppose their repeated attempts to ram through Congress – with Republican votes only –ill-conceived schemes that would harm millions of families and reshape one-sixth of the American economy.
Now it’s time for Congress to put aside these partisan repeal efforts and move swiftly to take care of two issues that require immediate and bipartisan action: stabilizing rather than sabotaging individual health insurance markets and funding the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).”
