Families USA Statement on Republican Plan to Slash Medicaid and Rip Health Care Away from Nearly 14 Million Americans
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Anthony Wright, executive director of Families USA, today released the following statement after the House Republicans released the text of their reconciliation bill on Sunday night, to be voted on Tuesday without any hearings. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) the bill would cause 13.7 million Americans to lose their health coverage.
“After months of promises from President Trump and Congressional Republicans that they weren’t going to touch Medicaid or its benefits, we now have proof in writing that this new GOP budget bill will do just that. This is the biggest cut to Medicaid ever, and an attack on the health care system on which all Americans rely. A bill to actually address waste and fraud would look dramatically different, but this isn’t it.
This bill takes a chainsaw to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act, with more than 13 million Americans losing coverage and care, and millions more will see their monthly and out-of-pocket costs increase. More uninsured individuals and cuts to state funding means hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and other providers will face devastating cuts, threatening the ability of many, from maternity wards to rural hospitals, to keep their doors open, impacting not just those on Medicaid, but everyone. Even the specific attacks on specific populations, whether against blue states or immigrants or gender affirming care, end up harming the health care of many more. No one is safe.
“The many Republicans who promised not to cut Medicaid benefits should be an easy ‘no’ vote. The President even promised to veto a bill that cuts Medicaid. In the absence of faith in their word, everyday Americans must call on Congress to oppose these draconian cuts that will rip health care from millions of Americans and raise costs for millions more.”
