Families USA Statement as House Prepares to Force Vote on Budget Bill to Rip Health Care Away From 15 Million Americans
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Anthony Wright, executive director of Families USA, released the following statement after House Republicans released their managers amendment and prepare to bring their budget bill to the floor, which includes severe cuts to Medicaid, Medicare and the Affordable Care Act (ACA), undermining the health care and terminating the health coverage of millions of Americans.
“Given this sham of a process, Congress has no business voting on this budget bill tonight or this week. House Republican leadership insists on rushing a floor vote on a bill that no member could possibly have read, much less fully analyzed to understand the impact on millions who will lose coverage, and millions more who will face higher health costs in both Medicaid and the insurance marketplaces. Through backroom deals in the cover of darkness, the just-released managers amendment makes clear that this bill has changed for the worse, terminating more Americans’ health care coverage even more quickly. Instead of listening to the millions of Americans clogging their phone lines and townhalls, or even those in their own party warning about the impact of Medicaid cuts on their own working class constituency, House Republicans are making bigger cuts to health coverage, public and private, and the health system we all rely on.
“Determined to make the biggest cut to Medicaid in history, Congress is rushing a bill through in just days, through meetings in the middle of the night, releasing amendments and text changes at the last minute, and trying to jam the bill forward before more Americans recognize what is happening to their health care. For what they themselves indicate is the most consequential piece of legislation in a generation, they aren’t even bothering to wait for a full analysis of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office about the impacts, which are major for Medicaid, Medicare, and the ACA. This isn’t a political game — this is literally life and death for low-income working families, people with disabilities, pregnant women and their babies, children, veterans, and people who rely on rural hospitals across the country — all of whom will pay the price of this disastrous bill for generations, while the billionaires reap the benefits.
“This should be an easy no vote for every member of Congress who vowed they wouldn’t cut Medicaid coverage or benefits, who declared they would not increase the deficit, and who has ever decried a lack of transparent or normal legislative process. This bill fails miserably on each of those tests. We will soon find out who will stand by their word and who will cave to corporate and billionaire donors looking for even bigger tax breaks. Health, community, and consumer organizations urge every Member of Congress to stop this sham and stand by the promises that were made to constituents who voted for better affordability, not the decimation of the health care system we all rely on.”
