Families USA: House must vote for price transparency and billing reforms to protect families from financial ruin caused by corporate hospital pricing abuses

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Frederick Isasi, executive director of Families USA, issued the following statement urging the U.S. House of Representatives to move quickly to pass the Lower Costs, More Transparency Act—a commonsense, bipartisan bill that addresses loopholes that allow big hospital corporations to exploit the system and pad their pockets at the expense of our nation’s families.

“Congress must prioritize and protect America’s families by passing the bipartisan Lower Costs, More Transparency Act NOW. They are running out of time to act and people across America cannot afford to wait for relief from unfair and outrageous medical bills. This is a critical opportunity to show that Congress can still work together to address issues that are most important to the people they serve. It’s time to show the American people who is for price transparency—allowing people to know if they are over-paying for their health care—and who isn’t.

“At a time when health care costs are ballooning out of control, lawmakers must put aside politics and reject the greed of corporate hospitals and their executives, who want the green light to secretly set any price for its health care services, whether those prices are warranted or not, and keep their pricing practices hidden at the expense of the health and financial security of our families.

“Every family across this nation deserves to know exactly how much a big hospital corporation will charge them before they receive medical care and services. And they shouldn’t be paying more for the same service just because greedy CEOs bought their doctor’s office to eliminate competition and drive up exorbitant prices. We urge House leadership to be bipartisan champions for transparency and lower health care costs so no one has to choose between paying their rent and going to the doctor.”
