E&C Health Subcommittee Forges New Path for Health Care Affordability with New Legislation Markup

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health’s recent markup of legislation aimed at increasing price transparency, Anthony Wright, executive director of Families USA, issued the following statement:

“We are encouraged that the subcommittee moved forward a stronger version of the Lower Costs, More Transparency Act of 2026, including key provisions for hospitals and plans to publish prices in dollars and cents with no exceptions. We support the committee members’ stated interest in strengthening enforcement of hospital price transparency rules further, such as requiring senior hospital officials to attest to the accuracy and completeness of their data.

“Price transparency is an essential tool for addressing high health care costs and holding health care corporations accountable for the runaway prices that are bankrupting Americans. Consumer groups have long advocated for many of the policies advanced today; as Families USA Senior Director of Health Policy Sophia Tripoli testified earlier this month, we are very supportive of the general direction of this bipartisan effort to rein in costs, whether of hospitals, commercial insurers, or Medicare Advantage plans.

“While transparency alone will not solve the affordability challenges facing families, it is an essential tool for accountability and a necessary foundation for broader efforts to lower health care costs.

“We remain hopeful that this, along with other recent initiatives to tackle issues affecting meaningful health care reform, such as the Subcommittee’s hearing on June 10, will advance bipartisan policies that address the health care affordability crisis and provide relief for families.”
