Cuts to Medicaid Supported by Congressional Republicans Would Have a Devastating Impact on Health Care Access for Residents in Macomb and Oakland Counties
New Fact Sheets from Families USA Highlights Importance of Medicaid for MI-10’s Families
LANSING, MI – A new fact sheet from Families USA details the impacts of deep cuts to the Medicaid program in the Republican budget that Rep. James voted for, which would have devastating consequences for the health and economic security of Macomb and Oakland counties. Medicaid provides health care coverage for more than 135,000 residents, according to the fact sheet.
“Americans have been showing up in townhalls, calling their representatives in Congress and demanding that Republicans in Washington stop their plan to massively cut the health care that Americans want and need,” said Anthony Wright, executive director of Families USA. “Deep cuts to Medicaid would be devastating for Michigan residents, resulting in significant coverage losses, forcing rural hospitals, long-term care facilities or community clinics to close or scale back services, and throwing state budgets into crisis. We should all be asking every member of Congress who voted for this budget why they are willing to harm working families in their own district just to pay for a tax break for billionaires.”
“The importance of Medicaid — not just to enrollees but to entire communities — is undeniable. Right now, 76% of Michigan’s Medicaid spending comes from federal dollars, and any cuts will negatively impact the 2.6 million Michiganders who rely on the program — including 30% of children in Michigan’s 7th House District. Proposed federal cuts or caps to Medicaid would create harm for those kids and their families — and the ripple effects would reach much further,” said Monique Stanton, president and CEO of Michigan League for Public Policy. “When clinics shut their doors, services are reduced, and health care workers lose their jobs, entire communities suffer. It’s not just access to care that’s at stake — it’s the stability of local economies and the well-being of everyone who calls those communities home.”
Medicaid is a lifeline for Macomb and Oakland counties:
- 181,400 residents — 24% of all residents in MI-10.
- 60,200 children — 39% of all children living in MI-10.
- 35,700 seniors and people with disabilities have Medicaid coverage.
Families across Michigan already struggle to pay for health care:
- 78% of people living in Michigan are worried about affording health care.
- 34% of people living in Michigan struggled to pay medical bills.
- 51% of people living in Michigan skipped needed care due to cost.
Families USA and the Michigan League for Public Policy are organizing in Michigan and across the nation to protect Medicaid from severe cuts, caps or other regulations that will result in millions of Americans losing access to the health care they need. Earlier this year, Families USA led hundreds of organizations to call on Congress and the Trump administration to reject cuts to Medicaid and work to make health care more affordable, not less.
