ADVISORY: Families USA to Launch Health Equity Action Center

WASHINGTON, December 3, 2018—Families USA will launch the first and only national entity dedicated to the advancement of U.S. health system transformation policies designed to reduce racial, ethnic and geographic inequities at the national, state and local levels.

WHY:
Each year, the United States loses $93 billion in avoidable health care costs and $175 billion due to premature births stemming directly from racial, ethnic and other health care inequities. Achieving a more equitable health care system is both a moral imperative and vital to the success of the U.S. economy.

Today, the majority of all children in the U.S. under the age of 10 are from communities of color. By 2020, the majority of all children under 18 will be of color and by 2045, the majority of Americans will be people of color. Thus, the men, women, and children of color are critical to the nation’s shared prosperity.

“Trying to improve our health care system without putting health equity in the center of the process is a recipe for failure,” said Sinsi Hernández-Cancio, director of the Center on Health Equity Action for System Transformation at Families USA. “It is essential that leaders from the most affected communities be a part of this work. Our mission is to help raise those voices and assist them to be as effective as possible. The excellent work in this area that has been done so far must be translated into policy action.”
