Surprise Medical Bills

Surprise medical bills occur when consumers are charged for out-of-network care that they receive due to no fault of their own. Surprise bills are incredibly common and can amount to hundreds or thousands of dollars.

For over two decades, Families USA has advocated ending surprise bills. Working with state advocate partners, we have helped 13 states enact comprehensive surprise bill laws, and we continue to partner in key states to enact protections. At the federal level, Families USA is currently leading a consumer fight to urge Congress to hold consumers harmless from surprise bills while keeping down overall costs.
