Families USA: The Senate must pass voting rights legislation to protect our health, wellbeing, freedom

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Frederick Isasi, Executive Director of Families USA, issued the following statement today in advance of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer bringing elections and voting legislation to the Senate floor.

“Today, our nation is in urgent need of federal voting rights legislation that ensures our elected officials are accountable to us, the people—that happens when all voters can participate in our democracy, regardless of where they live, their race, or their income.

“The recent attacks on voting rights are not just a threat to our freedom, but also to the ability of all families to achieve their best health. Free and fair elections are necessary so that all Americans—not just those with the most power or wealth—can hold lawmakers accountable for passing laws that address harmful health care inefficiencies, costs, and inequities. Protecting voting rights is how we make sure elected officials are serving our families, not pharmaceutical companies and corporate health care interests. Our health should not depend on our wealth.

“Congress needs to pass comprehensive legislation to protect the right to vote immediately. Our lives, freedom, and health depend on it.”
