Families USA files amicus in Columbus et al. v. Trump (“Take Care”) case

A coalition of cities (Columbus, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Chicago, and Philadelphia) and two individuals filed a lawsuit challenging the Trump Administrations’ many rules and administrative actions that sabotage the Affordable Care Act. The suit alleges that President Trump’s actions violate the President’s constitutional duty to “take care that the laws [of the United States] be faithfully executed.”

On June 7, Families USA, Community Catalyst, the National Health Law Program and Service Employees International Union (SEIU) filed an amicus brief in the case, explaining that the Affordable Care Act has substantially improved coverage and access to care for millions of people in America, and has greatly helped individuals and families with low and middle incomes. However, Trump administration actions to drastically cut outreach and enrollment assistance, promote the sale of short term limited duration insurance plans that do not comply with the Affordable Care Act, and to expand the sale of association health plans that lack consumer protections, are completely contrary to the goals of the Affordable Care Act. These actions will move the country backwards and undermine people’s access to high quality affordable care.
