Families USA’s Comments on Public Charge

12.06.2018

Families USA commented on the Trump Administration’s proposed “public charge” rule. Under the administration’s proposal, immigrants could be considered a public charge, and therefore denied entry to the country or denied the right to adjust status and become a lawful permanent resident, if they receive Medicaid or certain other public benefits for a period of time. The Trump administration is also considering whether the Children’s Health Insurance Program should count against immigrant families in a public charge determination. Families USA explains in its comments that the proposed rule would deeply harm immigrants, their families, other U.S. citizens, and detrimentally affect the U.S. Health Care system. It is antithetical to the actions that Congress has taken over the years to improve the health and wellbeing of our nation.

In addition to submitting our own comments, Families USA also joined with provider, insurer, and consumer group allies to submit a joint comment letter about the harms of the proposed rule.
