Big Health System CEOs to Testify Before Congress as Health Care Costs Continue to Skyrocket

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee announced a hearing next week with hospital system CEOs, Families USA, the longtime national nonpartisan health care consumer advocacy organization, released the following statement by its executive director, Anthony Wright:

“The CEOs of the big hospital chains have some explaining to do about their ever-increasing prices that are driving up our nation’s health care affordability crisis. We welcome the upcoming hearing with health system CEOs to spotlight the issue of high hospital prices. These hospital corporations use their consolidated market power to systematically overcharge patients and families when they are at their most vulnerable. Even as Congress makes massive cuts to Medicaid and our safety-net, big corporate health systems shouldn’t be allowed to hide behind the independent and safety-net hospitals most harmed as an excuse to continue overcharging commercial customers.

“The hearing presents an opportunity for Congressmembers of both parties to put these hospital executives on record about why their prices are so inflated and irrational, and also to start to take action on pricing abuses, anti-competitive practices and the lack of transparency. Congress must act to cut costs, not care. A hospital bill may be the biggest bill you get in your life, and hospital CEOs should be held accountable for their actions that put so many Americans in medical debt. Ultimately, Congress’s job is to confront the consolidation and drivers of high health prices that are bleeding Americans dry.”

Anthony Wright, executive director of Families USA, and other subject matter experts will be available to comment on the hearing.

The full committee hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28 and the witnesses are yet to be announced.
