Families USA Statement on Senate Republicans Doubling Down on Higher Health Care Premiums for Millions of Americans

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Anthony Wright, executive director of Families USA, today released the following statement after the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Chair Bill Cassidy released their reconciliation bill text, which includes cost-sharing reductions that would raise Americans’ health care premiums, as well as punish states that provide reproductive health and abortion care for their residents.

“The bill text released today makes clear that Senate Republicans are rushing ahead with a budget bill that raises health costs for everyone — including their own voters — ignoring the millions of Americans of all political parties who are clogging phone lines or showing up at townhalls scared about losing their health care. The Senate HELP Committee text doubles down on the disastrous bill passed by House Republicans. The text out today would raise health insurance premiums for 10 million people by as much as $1,400 a year.

“You cannot find a family in America that thinks they should be paying more for their health care, but instead of addressing affordability, Senate Republicans are increasing costs on working families to fund more tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. At the same time, they are extending tax cuts for the wealthiest; the proposed budget fails to extend the tax credits to help working- and middle-class consumers afford coverage, leading to further premium spikes of hundreds or even thousands of dollars and over 4 million people losing coverage.

“This bill text also punishes states for providing reproductive health and abortion care for their residents, despite years of Republican promises they will leave abortion policy decisions to the states. As we await additional bill text from the Senate, these provisions serve as a glaring red flag that Senate Republicans are charging forward with attacks on our health care, ripping coverage away from millions of Americans and raising costs for millions more. Families USA joins the entire health sector, from patients to plans to providers, in fighting to defeat this attack on the health system on which we all rely.”
