Families USA Urges Senate to Reject Budget that Will Gut Medicaid and Rip Health Care Away from Millions of Americans
WASHINGTON, D.C. – As Republican leadership in the Senate pushes forward with their budget plans that would rip health care away from millions of Americans to pay for more tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations, health and consumer advocates are urging a vote against the proposal, here’s a statement from Anthony Wright, executive director of Families USA, as the Senate is expected to vote on the budget resolution within the next day, kicking off the budget reconciliation process and clearing the way for massive cuts to the health care system on which we all rely.
“The Senate budget resolution recognizes how unpopular and unwanted these massive cuts to Medicaid are, not by countering with an alternative plan, but by concealing the cuts and how devastating it will be for their own constituents and communities. The House Republican budget resolution was upfront about how many hundreds of billions of dollars they want to cut from the health care of Americans to fund tax breaks for billionaires.
“Americans are packing town halls and calling their representatives in Congress, demanding that Republicans abandon their plan to slash away the health care that Americans want and need. The severe cuts to Medicaid that Republicans are trying to force through will mean millions of Americans losing coverage, hospitals and clinics closing their doors, state budgets thrown into crisis, and health care services we all depend on being eliminated. The end result would be a wrecking ball for local economies, hitting rural areas, veterans, communities of color, and low- and middle-income workers especially hard. The magnitude of these health cuts is on a similar scale to Republicans’ previous attempts to ‘repeal and replace’ the ACA — but this time, it is even more clear that it is repeal without any replacement, leaving many Americans uninsured, living sicker, and dying younger and one emergency from financial ruin.
“A vote for this budget betrays the very voters that sent Republican leaders to Washington to lower costs, and instead, those same leaders will oversee the shredding of our nation’s health care safety net, driving up costs for millions of Americans just to pay for tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Families USA urges every Senator who has told their constituents they won’t cut Medicaid to stand up and reject this budget.”
