ACA Enrollment Numbers Strong Despite Administration Attempts to Keep Them Down

Washington, D.C. – Final numbers for the Affordable Care Act’s 2017 open enrollment season released today show 9.2 million people purchased health care in the federal Marketplace. This is a slight decrease over last year. Millions more have enrolled in coverage through state-based Marketplaces, with states like Washington posting increases. But, while enrollment ended on Jan. 31 in the federal facilitated marketplace, it continued later into the week in some states, like California and those numbers are still not known.

Following is the statement of Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA, on the success of the release of the 2017 enrollment numbers.

“Millions of people got their insurance through the federal Marketplace, despite President Trump’s attempt to sabotage enrollment. The President stopped, and then limited, the outreach and advertising reminding people that the enrollment deadline was nearing. This may have cost about 500,000 additional enrollments. He signed an executive order designed to throw sand in the gears of the ACA. And then there was the constant – but completely untrue – drumbeat that the ACA was a failure that needed to go.

“And despite all that, millions of consumers still got their insurance through the ACA. Their numbers show the Republican rush to repeal the ACA without a replacement will do real harm to real people.”
