Families USA Applauds Mainers for Voting to Expand Medicaid and Give 80,000 More Residents Access to Affordable, Quality Health Care

Washington, D.C. –  Last night, Maine residents voted to expand Medicaid, making Maine the 33rd state (including the District of Columbia) to expand Medicaid. The vote supersedes five vetoes by Governor LePage of the legislature’s attempt to expand access to Medicaid for Mainers.

Following is the statement of Frederick Isasi, executive director of Families USA, on the results on Maine’s Medicaid expansion:

“It’s an incredible accomplishment that Mainers voted to expand Medicaid by ballot measure last night and we have been proud to support this work. This clear and decisive statement by Mainers to bring health care to 80,000 people is an important win for hard-working families, many of whom will now have health coverage for the first time.

Maine has proven that ballot initiatives are a powerful way for Americans to stand up for their families, cut through political gamesmanship and spin, and send a clear message to lawmakers that the people want affordable, quality health care. We are excited to see how other grassroots efforts to launch ballot initiatives for 2018 to expand access to health care develop.”
