Families USA: SCOTUS decision in Dobbs is a full assault on women, families, access to health care
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Families USA Executive Director Frederick Isasi issued the following statement today on the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, eliminating the constitutional right to abortion in America:
“The Supreme Court’s decision to deny millions of people abortion services is a full assault on our fundamental right to privacy and jeopardizes the lives and health of women. We are in a devastating moment as a nation. Our highest Court has told women in this country that they do not have a right to make one of the most important health decisions that determines their and their families’ future: when or whether to have children.
”Let’s be clear that the Court’s reasoning squarely aims to dismantle other fundamental protections like the ability of LGBTQ people to fall in love and marry. Even such basic rights like the ability to use birth control, for people of different ethnicities to marry and generally to be free from government intrusion in our homes.
“The Court’s decision will not affect all people equally. Let’s be clear about who will be most hurt by today’s decision: millions of marginalized, working, and Black and brown individuals from underserved communities who cannot fly or drive to a different state that is protecting access to abortion.
“Our mothers and grandmothers fought hard to enshrine the fact that abortion access is health care access. That precedent prevailed for a half-century, until today. With this ruling, our attention must now shift to the states. Each of us has to demand that state leaders protect women’s rights to reproductive health care.
“It is unconscionable that our justices have turned their backs on women by overruling something a vast majority of people in this country strongly supported for decades. This isn’t a partisan issue. Abortion and access to reproductive services is essential health care.”
