Alcohol Taxes and Public Health

One of the most effective ways to reduce excessive use of alcohol is to raise alcohol taxes. But alcohol taxes in this country are low and updated so infrequently that their value has declined significantly over time. Raising these taxes will curtail drinking, particularly heavy drinking, and it will reduce the consequences of alcohol abuse.

This fact sheet presents an overview of the negative consequences of alcohol misuse, as well as statistics that show how raising alcohol taxes can reduce these consequences and save lives. Advocates can use these statistics to bolster their efforts to raise local or state alcohol taxes.
