Turn Up the Music to Save Our Health Care!

It is time to raise our voices and crank up our power jam!

With the Senate health care bill released, it is more critical than ever for health care advocates to take action to stop the bill. To help you keep up the fight, Families USA has compiled a Spotify playlist, "Songs to Save Health Care."

We reached out to you— the advocates who have been mobilizing for months to fight against the repeal of the Affordable Care Act and harmful cuts to Medicaid— to gather the songs that most inspire and motivate you in your fight to protect our care.

If the songs weren’t inspiring enough, we are also combining them with the story behind the advocate who shared them with us. Here are the songs that motivate advocates around the country to fight for health care, and their stories of dedication, perseverance, and success.

Listen to our new Spotify playlist, “Songs to Save Health Care” to get energized and motivated to turn up the heat on the Senate to Protect Our Care!!

Nancy M. Gomez
Organizing Director, Health Access California

  • Song to Save Health Care: Stand Back by Stevie Nicks

“I use it to channel my inner warrior and tell any legislator who plans to undo the gains achieved by the ACA to “Stand Back” because we are not going to take this sitting down and we will fight ‘till the end to ensure patient and consumer protections remain in place. So “Stand Back” to whoever gets in the way!”

  • Advocacy: “As Organizing Director for Health Access California, we’ve been out in the streets demonstrating, protesting, shouting, sharing personal stories, and visiting Republican legislators… we will continue this fight for as long as it takes!”

Serena Reeves
Navigator Program Specialist, Community Action

  • Song to Save Health Care: Break My Stride by Mathew Wilder and Survivor by Destiny’s Child

“I’m not going to stop fighting for my clients, finding solutions for them, advocating for them. No matter what happens, we as an agency have always been here, and will continue to be here.”

  • Advocacy: “We go out into the community and give presentations [promoting the ACA and Open and Special Enrollments], talk to people about their need and help meet those needs. We are a small organization with 2 staff and 4 volunteers and have enrolled over 400+ people for 2017 coverage.”

Andrew Kessler
Principal, Slingshot Solutions LLC

  • Song to Save Health Care: Not for Me by Slash

“It’s a song about overcoming addiction, a critical piece of the health care puzzle, [and] about using all [of] your energy and soul to fight for something you cherish—your health and sanity.”

  • Advocacy: “I advocate for substance abuse service on behalf of providers and professionals, making Congress aware of the impact ACA repeal would have on the opioid epidemic and addiction/SUD services.”

Deb Farmer
President, Westside Family Health Center

  • Song to Save Health Care: I am Woman by Helen Reddy

“In the second verse, the lyrics speak to me about facing adversity and coming back stronger and more committed than ever—that’s where I am. Stronger and more committed to fight for health care for everyone.”

  • Advocacy: “I work at a community health center where 49% of our patients are still uninsured. I am a pre-existing condition…yet because I have access to affordable health care and a wonderful team of medical professionals, I am able to be the CEO of a health center and ensure that over 12,000 community members have access to affordable, high quality health care.”

Richard Henighan
Nurse Practitioner, Tennessee Health Care Campaign

  • Song to Save Health Care: Ain’t You Got A Right to the Tree of Life by Guy & Candy Carawan

“Simple words that go to the Heart of the Matter.”

  • Advocacy: “As a retired Nurse Practitioner, I am able to join with local activists in keeping Health Care Justice in the public eye.”

Susie Emmert Schatz
Senior Director of Advocacy, Lutheran Social Service of MN

  • Song to Save Health Care: Stubborn Love by The Lumineers

“The words ‘the opposite of love’s indifference’ and ‘keep your head up, my love’ help us remember that we show love for our country [and] our friends and neighbors, by how we show up for them. I won’t be indifferent to injustice or [the] struggle of others.”

  • Advocacy: “I am so proud of how [Minnesota advocates] have formed a coalition of hard working advocates who think and breathe Medicaid...We have hosted 3 simultaneous town halls all focused on Medicaid, with expert panelists, storytellers, and over 200 citizens. We are ready to fight and will work as hard as it takes to save Medicaid.”

Health care advocates and activists are committed to the fight to Protect Our Care. The stories above represent a small sample of the incredible mobilizing all across the country to stand up against legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act and cut Medicaid for millions.
