William Lutz is the Senior Director of Communications at Families USA. He brings more than two decades of strategic nonprofit communications experience to the job. He oversees the organization’s media relations, digital, web, and publications teams. In addition, Lutz serves on the Leadership Team and works closely with the program staff to develop and implement effective strategic communications plans to further the organization’s ongoing outreach, education, and advocacy efforts.
Mr. Lutz’s entire career has been dedicated to nonprofit and social justice causes, including legal aid for the poor, women’s reproductive rights, the uninsured, and the environment.
Before joining Families USA, Mr. Lutz worked at Defenders of Wildlife, one of the nation’s premier wildlife conservation organizations. There he served in a dual capacity: As the Senior Director of Communications, he oversaw all aspects of the organization’s strategic communications activities, and as Senior Director of the Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, the organizations’ political arm, he managed all the entity’s electoral, legislative, and candidate-related campaigns.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Lutz worked served as Communications Director for NARAL Pro-choice America, for the Legal Services Corporation, and with several political direct mail and public relations/polling firms, including MSHC Partners and GMMB.
Mr. Lutz is a native New Yorker. He earned his BA from the George Washington University and resides in Virginia with his wife, two daughters, and three cats.
