Families USA, a leading national voice for health care consumers dedicated to the achievement of high-quality, affordable health care and improved health for all, seeks an experienced and mission-driven leader to serve as its next Executive Director. Reporting to Families USA’s Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be based in Washington, D.C.; will engage and lead a staff of more than 40 dedicated professionals; and will manage an annual budget of approximately $7 million.

Since its founding in 1982, Families USA has been a leader in the health justice movement, working at national, state, and community levels. Families USA is comprised of nonprofit, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities that advance its mission through public policy analysis, advocacy, and collaboration with partners to promote a patient-and communitycentered health care system. Key areas of focus, advocacy, and research, intended to transform the health care system into a modern, efficient, high-quality system that truly promotes a culture of health in the nation, include: (i) health care affordability; (ii) protecting and strengthening public health safety-net programs like Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program; (iii) ensuring comprehensive coverage, beginning with an initiative to expand oral health coverage; and (iv) integrating the health care system with community services to improve overall population health and to reduce racial and ethnic disparities in health and health care.

Families USA is proud to have played a key role in some of the most important advances in health policy in the nation's history. Notable successes include the creation of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in 1997 and its expansion in 2009, and the enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010, the most significant step toward universal health care since the creation of Medicare and Medicaid.

The current Executive Director, Ron Pollack, who has successfully led Families USA and advanced its agenda for over 34 years, will be retiring from his position in March 2017. The Families USA Board and its Leadership Transition Committee are seeking a leader for the organization’s next chapter, who has the skills, ambition and capacity to drive the organization to advance its mission, who has the ability, energy and experience to provide strategic direction in a time of change and transformation, who can successfully manage and leverage its reputational, financial and human resources to achieve significant strategic impact, who can attract additional resources to meet the known, and as yet unknown, challenges in an ever-shifting health policy 2 landscape, and who has the communication and advocacy skills to articulate the needs of underserved populations in securing their rights under Medicaid, the ACA, commercial insurance contracts, and other federal and state health care programs.

Families USA works hard to achieve high-quality, comprehensive, and affordable health care for all Americans. Its efforts toward that goal include: • Conducting probative research and insightful analysis on current and future developments in health care policy.

  • Educating and working with policymakers, regulators and public officials at all levels of government.
  • Collaborating with individuals, agencies, and organizations across the political, business, nonprofit, academic, and health care sectors.
  • Conceiving and conducting targeted advocacy campaigns that impact health policy options.
  • Providing technical assistance to health care advocates and other partners at the state and community levels.
  • Producing reliable, timely, and highly respected policy reports, fact sheets, issue briefs, and other informative resources.
